A headmistress of a government middle school in Salem had allegedly declared a two-day holiday for her daughter's marriage this week under the pretext of "non-existent" local festival, officials said on Saturday.
The education department has ordered a probe following complaints by parents that Headmistress Tamilselvi declared holiday for the school in Pukkumpatty on Feb 17 and 18 for her daughter's marriage held in Chennai under the pretext of non-existent local festival, the officials. Around 300 students study in the school which has nine teachers. In their complaint to the District Educational Officer, the parents of the students alleged that there was no
festival in their village on the two days and the holiday was declared only because of the marriage.
Officials said the headmistress has denied the charge. The DEO has directed the Assistant Educational Officer Senkottuvel to enquire and submit a report, officials added.
